Newsletter on Extension of Deadline for Registration of Data Controllers and Processors of Major Importance
Following the deadline of 30th June 2024 for Registration of Data Controllers and Data Processors of Major Importance, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has issued a public notice informing all stakeholders of the extension of the deadline from the initial deadline of 30th June 2024 to 30th September 2024. Hence, the penalty fee for failing to register by 30th June 2024 has been waived.
The NDPC had issued a Guidance Notice on the Registration of Data Controllers and Data Processors of Major Importance, mandating existing data controllers and data processors to register between 30th January 2024 and 30th June 2024. Any registration after the deadline or failure to register was deemed a default, and such organizations were to face penalties as stipulated in the Act.
According to the NDPC, the extension is aimed to provide additional time for organizations to comply with the registration requirement and ensure that all necessary data protection measures are adequately implemented.
As a Data Protection Compliance Organization (DPCO), Jackson, Etti & Edu encourages all organizations that are yet to register to do so within the extended timeframe to ensure compliance and avoid penalties. You can contact us on DataProtection@jee.africa for more information.
