Description
On Friday, 6th December 2024, the Energy and Infrastructure Sector of Jackson, Etti & Edu hosted an enlightening Industry Chat themed “Rethinking Nigeria’s Upstream Petroleum Operations in the Energy Transition: The Role of ESG Analysis, Carbon Accounting, and Carbon Credits.”
The event featured Mr Heine Melkevik, CEO/Managing Director of Carbon Limits Nigeria, who delivered a compelling and passionate presentation on the modalities and operationalisation of the carbon credit market. His presentation highlighted Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to decarbonisation, tracing the journey from the nation’s signing of the Paris Agreement in 2016 and its ratification in 2017, to pivotal initiatives like the Nigeria Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (2018) and the landmark Climate Change Act (2021).
These efforts underscore Nigeria’s dedication to leveraging its reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Mr. Melkevik emphasized that a robust approach to carbon credits and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) frameworks can significantly redefine the country’s upstream petroleum sector while supporting its transition to a low-carbon economy.
At Jackson, Etti & Edu, we firmly believe that if these innovations and initiatives are effectively implemented by the government and its respective agencies, Nigeria’s petroleum industry will not only evolve but also position the country and Africa at large as global leaders in sustainability and climate action.
We remain committed to fostering conversations and partnerships that drive progress in the energy and infrastructure sectors
